We nurture plants that came from the land long before we were here
Define the term:
Native plant
What is a “native plant” anyway?
If you consult the North Carolina Extension Gardener Handbook, native plants are “those species that evolved naturally in a region without human intervention.”
More plainly, native plants are the plants of the land. They have grown in an area for thousands of years; this allowed them to develop intricate and important relationships with the other plants and animals around them (including humans).
Get to know me
I’m a plant person through and through — enchanted by houseplants, a lover of veggie gardens, and endlessly curious about every green thing in between. But my heart belongs to native plants. Why? They carry stories of place. Asters and goldenrods and all their fellows have been gracing the grasslands in Virginia since well before Jefferson founded UVA. Today, native plants still offer to knit together the lives of people and creatures. We just have to be paying attention to see it.
I love teaching others how natives fit into landscapes, support pollinators and soil health, all while offering beauty that’s both meaningful and relatively low-fuss.
Let me help you discover native plants that suit your yard, lifestyle, and local ecosystem — we’ll learn, plant, and celebrate the land together.
